The Top Cleaning Tasks we all Neglect and Avoid

It’s that time of year again when a deep spring clean is on the horizon, and you’d be surprised how many parts of your house can get forgotten. Let’s be honest, we all have those cleaning tasks which we either avoid doing, or didn’t even know we needed to do in the first place.

To help with your spring cleaning checklists, we’ve put together the top tasks that need more TLC and our best tips to tackle them.

THE WASHING MACHINE DRAWER

If you’re a cleaning pro, you know all about cleaning out the lint catcher and giving the inside of your washing machine a wipe, but do you pay attention to the drawer that you put the softener and powder in? Luckily for you, this is a super easy task as these drawers are detachable and can be quickly cleaned with a soak in your favourite disinfectant and a wipe down with your Marigold Oops Away All Purpose Cloth; unlike kitchen roll, this cloth stays strong both dry and wet making them perfect for quick spills. Ideally we’d recommend doing this every month to avoid build up of mildew and powder.

THE COUCH CUSHIONS

Did you know you’re supposed to wash your couch cushions once every six months at least? With the couch being where most families spend their quality time, this job is more important than ever! Couches collect a lot of dirt, dust, food and dead skin, even if you have cosy throws and blankets. When you’ve popped the cushion covers and blankets in the wash, take the time to really deep clean your couch as this is where all the loose change and dirt ends up! Grab your favourite vacuum cleaner or handheld hoover and get cleaning. If you have leather effect couch cushions, grab a damp Marigold Squeaky Clean Microfibre Cloth to wipe away any grease or dust marks. Nothing says comfy like a freshly cleaned couch!

THE DISHWASHER

You’d think the dishwasher would clean itself but alas, it does not! Built up grime and food can decrease your dishwashers efficacy and you’ll find that dishes aren’t being cleaned as well as usual. Here are three quick tips to get your dishwasher sparkling clean: Remove the dish racks and pop them in hot soapy water to soak. Then grab your Marigold Wiper Upper All-Purpose Cloth to wipe away any remaining water and food in the drain. Our Wiper Upper Cloths are extra absorbent, and stay fresher with a special antibacterial formulation.* Place a cup of white vinegar in the empty dishwasher and run on a hot cycle, this will take care of any remaining dirt and grime whilst tackling any smells from left over food. Finally, sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda across the bottom of the machine and run a short hot cycle. This will help remove stains and leave a shining interior.

DOOR FRAMES AND SKIRTING BOARDS

If you’re an ‘out of sight out of mind’ kind of cleaner, this one's for you! The average home collects about 40 pounds (18kg) of dust each year, and a lot of that ends up forgotten on the top of our door frames and on our skirting boards. There’s no need for this task to be a stress if you have the right tools. Used dry, our Marigold Let It Shine! Microfibre Cloths remove dust with ease; and when used with just water, they even remove over 99% of bacteria**!

DOOR KNOBS AND LIGHT SWITCHES

Sometimes the small things can go unnoticed, but they are just as important! Door knobs and light switches are handled and touched multiple times a day, which means they collect the grease from our hands and any bacteria on our skin. Every time you do a tidy up, just set aside five minutes to whizz round the house and take care of these little tasks. The best Marigold cloth for this is the Marigold Let It Shine! Microfibre Cloth, simply dampen the cloth and you’ll find your doorknobs shining! Not only can this cloth be machine washed at 40 degrees for multiple uses, it also removes over 99% of bacteria making it the perfect match for high contact areas**.

LAMPS AND ACCESSORIES

You want your home decor to shine just like the rest of your house, so be sure to give some extra love to the accessories throughout it! A quick five minute wipe down of your vases, candles and lamps will add that extra sparkle. Our Marigold Squeaky Clean Microfibre Cloth can be used both wet and dry to remove any grease or built up dust so the dazzle can be put back in your decor.

TV AND REMOTES

Nothing is more annoying than a streak of dust or grease getting in the way of your Netflix marathon! Here are our top tips for keeping your soapbox clean. Firstly, make sure to unplug the TV before you start, we don’t want this to be too much of a shock! Grab a dry Marigold Let it Shine! Microfibre Cloth and gently wipe down the screen in circular motions. The extra thick material of this cloth will collect the dust on the screen without smearing it or damaging the surface. Finally, don’t forget the remotes! Remove the batteries and grab another Let it Shine! Microfibre Cloth. Used damp, this cloth removes 99% of bacteria with just a little water**. Now you can settle down and enjoy a crystal clear view! So there you have it, now you won’t be able to complete a clean without remembering these once forgotten tasks. Be sure to tell us over on our socials which tasks usually slip your mind and happy cleaning!
